The new results; “An amazing breakthrough”

Polar Light Technologies newly established process in a modern production grade reactor
have shown an outstandingly positive outcome. The measurements showed an incredible
breakthrough, with an impressive 10,000 time-fold improvement.

With its microsized pyramidal structures, Polar Light Technologies develops the next
generation of microLEDs. The technology is born from a unique and long-time research by
Professor Per-Olof Holtz and his research team at Linköping University. Since the beginning,
the dedicated development team has refined the technology and developed a bottom-up
microLED with unmatched pixel size, brightness and energy efficiency.

In November last year Polar Light Technologies had a proof of concept where pyramids were
managed to grow and light was generated. The process has now been transferred to a
modern production grade reactor, where careful adjustments have resulted in a stable
process. The improvement made during the eight months surpassed the plans. Multiple
separate runs were made, and they all came out with an amazingly bright glow. The
measurements showed a remarkable 2,9 million nits – a 10,000-fold improvement from last
fall’s test runs.

“We have worked for a long time to improve the technology through several
adjustments, and this is the result of careful and hard work. Our technology has a
long background in research, a full 10 to 15 years. I always believed in the concept,
and it is now amazing to see it work”, says Per-Olof Holtz, CSO and founder of Polar
Light Technologies
.

The microLEDs show a high internal quantum efficiency, reproducibility, and homogeneity.
These are crucial key points in the semiconductor game. The results clearly show the
effectiveness and competitiveness of the pyramidal microLEDs, and above all this indicates
that the basic concept is very strong and allows Polar Light Technologies to go further than
many competing technologies.

“The high numbers are very exciting. The fact that we have also managed to achieve
such a good result before we have even carried out any optimizations is absolutely
incredible. It is an amazing breakthrough and we could not be more excited”, says
CMO Nathalie Elsässer.

Next on the agenda is an optimization journey. There are quite a few tricks up the sleeves
which would further improve and refine the technology that have yet to be tested. The goal
is to achieve 5 million nits with a pixel size of one micrometer within a year and reach 10
million nits thereafter

“We now set our sights on the HUD and HMD market, where we foresee a wide range
of application possibilities”, says Elsässer.
